Real Madrid had a player sent off and Thibaut Courtois saved a late penalty as they beat Athletic Club 2-0 to win the Supercopa de España for the 12th time at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to break down their opponents in the first 30 minutes and were nearly caught cold by a swift counter-attack from Marcelino’s men. Iñaki Williams saw his shot blocked by what appeared to be David Alaba’s arm in the box but the referee did not deem the incident to be worthy of a penalty.
Karim Benzema came close with a right-footed curler which deflected just wide of Unai Simón’s post before Luka Modrić made the breakthrough in the 38th minute. Rodrygo ran at the Athletic defence before teeing up the Croatian at the edge of the box, who passed the ball into the corner with a sublime effort.
Real Madrid beat Athletic Club-Oihan Sancet came close to equalising just before half-time when he wriggled away from a few Real defenders before his shot glanced the top of the crossbar. But Los Blancos opened up a two-goal cushion right at the start of the second half to take the game away from Athletic Club.

Yeray Álvarez handled in the box from Benzema’s shot and the Frenchman stepped up to tuck the spot-kick into the corner for his 25th goal of the season. Just as it looked as if Real were easing their way to the trophy Éder Militão was then sent off for handling a goal-bound header from Raúl García underneath the crossbar giving Athletic Club a chance to get back into the game.
García dusted himself off to take the penalty but Thibaut Courtois pulled off a stunning save with his feet to keep Real’s two-goal cushion in tact. The ten-men hung on to pick up their first trophy of the campaign as Real Madrid enjoyed their mid-season trip to Saudi Arabia.
