Viktor Axelsen entered the contest after winning his first two group matches in straight games. As expected he took lead early on in the first game against Prannoy. Soon he entered the interval with a four-point lead.
After the break, Prannoy managed to reduce the deficit to two points as the scores were 12-14. However, Axelsen asserted his dominance as he grabbed the next four points on the trot and sealed the first game 21-14 after a brilliant cross-court smash.
The second game started off with Prannoy hitting a body smash straight on to the headband of Axelsen. But Axelsen soon took the lead and was crusing as he enterd the interval with a 11-8 lead.
While the World No.1 was expected to run away with yet another victory in straight games, he allowed Prannoy to make a comeback in the contest. He committed two costly errors that reduced his lead to just a solitary point. Prannoy capitalised on the opoortunity as he hit two successful smashes and took a 14-12 lead.
Prannoy didn’t let the World No.1 make a comeback as he extended his lead to 16-12. Axelsen continue to make service and net errors as Prannoy took the second game 21-18.
In the deciding game, both the players fought hard as the scores were 10-10. A misjudge from Axelsen on the sideline helped Prannoy eter the break with a slender one-point lead. Prannoy continued to lead 14-13 and a series of service and net-errors from Axelsen helped him get a fiour-point cushion.
However trailing 15-19, Axelsen takes three points on the trot to take the scores to 18-19. But he failed to level the scores as he hit outside the backline to give Prannoy the match point.The Indian then sealed the game with a smash.
