Ahed of the match Oleksandr Zinchenko was handed the captain’s armband to support Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion. The captains and the referee upheld the Ukrainian flag at the coin toss. It was an emotional moment for Zinchenko.

The Posh were right on point in the first half as they kept a low block and defended everything that came their way. Manchester City dominated possession through the first half but they never really got that opening in the first quarter. Ilkay Gundogan got once chance as he created an opening and then tried curling the ball around the far post. But it went wide though Peterborough custodian Steven Benda had it covered.

Gundogan was very active in attack as he combined with Mahrez this time. A brilliant ball from the Algerian reached Gundogan but his header was wide off target. Peterborough were simply superb for a club that are at the bottom of the EFL Championship.

The Posh did exceptionally well to hold on to a 0-0 draw till halftime as they defended resolutely and their custodian Steven Benda also looked brilliant under the sticks.

They started the second with a similar heart and intensity as Sammie Szmodics had the opportunity to hand them the lead. But he struck his shot wide from close range. Peterborough also had another chance as Jorge Grant was completely unmarked in the penalty. Just when he was about to take his shot, Phil Foden came up with an excellent block to avert the goalbound shot.

City finally stamped their authority as Riyad Mahrez found some space and thumped a low left-footed effort past Benda to take the lead for Pep Guardiola’s men. It was City’s first shot on target, proving how excellent the hosts have been defensively.

Manchester City could have scored again as Mahrez had another chance to double the lead but he missed it just by a whisker. But Jack Grealish compensated for it by scoring the insurance goal. A brilliant long ball from midfield by Phil Foden reached Grealish in space in the penalty area as he simply tucked it past Benda to double the lead.

Peterborough had some chance of running away with a consolation goal as substitute Jack Marriott came up with a brilliant shot on target. But the attempt was well taken care of by Ederson as City marched on to the quarterfinals.
