OFFICIAL! Manchester United rope in Ruben Amorim from Sporting to replace Erik Ten Hag

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of Manchester United until Ruben joins on November 11.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and now Ruben Amorim. Sporting Lisbon have provided huge talents to Manchester United, with the latest one being their manager Amorim, who has officially joined the Red Devils as head coach. The Portuguese replaces Erik Ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday, October 28.

Ruben Amorim to take charge from Nov 11

Amorim, who has led Sporting to nine out of nine wins in Liga Portugal, will take the helm from November 11. Till then, former United player and current interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue in his role. In fact, Manchester United are playing two Premier League games (vs. Chelsea & vs. Leicester City) and a UEFA Europa League game (vs. PAOK) till November 10. In all these fixtures, the Dutch will act as United’s interim manager.

Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements. He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November. Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”

After Erik ten Hag was fired by Manchester United on Monday, the club sought to immediately appoint Ruben Amorim. A week is a long time in football, and the next guy in the dugout at Old Trafford will be Sporting CP’s head coach. Ruben Amorim’s release clause was activated through swift negotiations with United, although throughout the notice period, there were problems.

Amorim had to provide 30 days’ notice to quit his position in Portugal, but Sporting agreed to shorten that term in exchange for an additional €1 million (£840,000) on top of his €10 million (£8.4 million) release clause. United had to pay for their guy. After four years at Sporting, Amorim is keen on an amicable departure, recognizing his connection with the club and its supporters, highlighted by two league title wins. Manchester United respects this transition, with Ruud van Nistelrooy stepping up as interim manager. Van Nistelrooy will guide United through four more matches. In his first clash as an interim manager, Van Nistelrooy saw an incredible 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

Ruben Amorim will face Ipswich Town in his role as the new Manchester United manager on November 24, following an international break.
