Newcastle’s Triumph: Manchester United not even the best ‘United’ in PL anymore

Manchester United haven’t won an away game against a team that started the day in the top eight of the table since October 2021

In a stunning result at St James’ Park, Newcastle United outclassed Manchester United, securing a well-deserved 1-0 victory that reshapes the Premier League (PL) hierarchy. Anthony Gordon’s clinical finish in the 55th minute, courtesy of Kieran Trippier’s precise delivery, symbolized Newcastle’s dominance throughout the match, leaving Erik Ten Hag’s side in disarray.

The energy and determination displayed by Eddie Howe’s squad sharply contrasted with Manchester United’s lackluster performance. Despite a late attempt by Harry Maguire, deflecting Antony’s shot into the net, the offside position deemed the equalizer undeserved.

The defeat sees Manchester United plummet to seventh place, allowing Newcastle to leapfrog them into fifth, even surpassing Tottenham.

Newcastle United dominated 1st Half

Newcastle’s superiority was evident from the kickoff, with Andre Onana, under scrutiny for his recent struggles, making crucial saves to keep Miguel Almiron at bay. The first half showcased Newcastle’s attacking prowess, with near misses from Alexander Isak and Jamal Lascelles, highlighting the visitors’ defensive vulnerabilities.

Kieran Trippier’s expertly struck free-kick, hitting the crossbar, added to Manchester United’s woes before halftime. Despite a valiant defensive effort from Maguire, blocking Fabian Schar’s attempt, both teams entered the break on level terms.

Manchester United threat nullified

While concerns lingered about Newcastle’s stamina, given their thin squad, Eddie Howe’s side only intensified their efforts in the second half. The breakthrough came as Trippier’s low cross found Gordon, who capitalized on a momentary lapse from Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a clinical finish. St James’ Park erupted in celebration, contrasting sharply with the subdued demeanor of Ten Hag’s squad.

Manchester United attempted a late resurgence, substituting Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, but Newcastle’s narrow lead held firm. The home side, however, faced a setback as goalkeeper Nick Pope exited the field due to injury.

A late scare emerged for Newcastle when Antony’s shot found the net, but Maguire’s offside position nullified the goal. Given the glaring contrast in performance, the potential equalizer would have been an injustice to Newcastle’s stellar display. As the dust settles, Newcastle revels in a significant victory, leaving Manchester United grappling with a redefined Premier League hierarchy.
