Inter Miami still have an immaculate record in the Leagues Cup. They have not lost a single match yet. In the group stage, they won 1-2 against Cruz Azul and 4-0 against Atlanta United. Qualifying for the round of 32 following a top-of-the-table finish, they won that match 3-1 against Orlando City. They drew 4-4 at the end of the official 90 minutes in their round of 16 match against FC Dallas. They won the penalty shootout by a 3-5 margin. Qualifying for the quarter-finals, they will face Charlotte FC.
During the pre-match press conference, coach Gerardo Martino was all praise for captain Lionel Messi who has been leading the team to one victory after another. He said, “He is not doing here neither more nor less than what we saw in the World Cup with Argentina. Leo’s leadership on and off the pitch has been notable in recent years. I’m thinking about what he did in the World Cup because that reflects the kind of leader he has become.”
Charlotte FC came to the Leagues Cup with a new determination and it shows. In the MLS, they are currently occupying the 12th position in the MLS Eastern Conference table. They have registered 9 defeats, 8 draws, and 6 wins. Whereas, in the Leagues Cup, they have found their footing and have caused back-to-back upsets. They eliminated Liga MX giants Cruz Azul, MLS giants Houston Dynamo. However, they now face Lionel Messi and Co. in the quarter-final and it will be one of their toughest challanges so far.
Charlotte’s first match in the Leagues Cup group stages was against FC Dallas which ended in a 2-2 draw. The league has no rules for draws even if it’s the group stages, so the match went into a penalty shootout which Charlotte won by a 4-1 margin. They won 4-1 against Necaxa in their next group-stage match. After drawing 0-0 in the round of 32 game, they won 4-3 against Cruz Azul in that match. Now they are approaching the quarter-finals on the back of a 2-1 win against Houston Dynamo.

- After coming off from the bench in the 64th minute in Miami’s round of 32 game against Orlando City, Jordi Alba started the match in their last game. In the round of 16 game against FC Dallas, the former trio of Barcelona – Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Alba seemed to be back in their glory days. All of them are expected to make the starting XI again.
- Messi will surely lead the attack from the right flank in the final third. Along with his former Barcelona teammates, the Argentine has also built a strong relationship with his new teammates at Miami. Two of them are forwards Robert Taylor and Josef Martinez. They could continue to help Messi in the attack.
- Taylor scored an own goal in their last match by mistake. While that should not cost him his place in the starting XI, it will still have to be seen what decision the coach makes. Additionally, Miami’s defense needs a lot of work. However, they will probably still go with the same four – Yedlin, Miller, Kryvtsov, and Alba.

- The coach could continue with their 4-1-4-1 formation with Karol Swiderski leading from the centre forward position. Kamil Jóźwiak, Scott Arfield, Brandt Bronico, and Kerwin Vargas will help him from the line just behind him. Kristijan Kahlina will probably start under the goalposts.
