Kylian Mbappe put on a show at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday with two majestic strikes to seal France’s place in the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old played a part in all three goals to take his tally to 5 goals in Qatar. The French forward is comfortably the leading scorer in the tournament and took his tally to 9 goals in World Cup history.

A 19-year-old Mbappe had found the next four times during France’s victorious 2018 campaign. He became the first Frenchman to score four or more goals in consecutive World Cup campaigns. More importantly, Mbappe surpassed Pele’s tally, becoming the first player under 24 to score 9 FIFA WC Goals.

Meanwhile, Pele’s record stood for 60 years with none one coming close to beating it. The likes of Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi have all failed, whereas Mbappe has now triumphed. He has surpassed Ronaldo’s 8 WC final goals and equalled Messi’s tally of 9. This comes despite featuring in three World Cups less than the dynamic duo. For context, Mbappe would still only be 35 at the 2034 World Cup.

The record for most goals in FIFA WC history stands with Miroslav Klose. The German striker scored 16 goals in 24 appearances to top the charts. Given Mbappe’s scoring rate and with age on his side, it is only a matter of question when he scales down this record. By comparison, Pele had a total of 12 goals in the world cup finals. The France record stands with Just Fontaine after he scored 13 foals in the 1958 edition.

Primed as one of the greatest to be, Mbappe can now boast the staggering stat of 250 goals in 360 matches for club and country. He already has a World Cup title to his name and could lead France to another one in Qatar later this month. Les Blue have been dealt a tricky draw, facing England in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
