Manchester United stay out of trouble in FA Cup as Erik Ten Hag prevents new embarrassment

Manchester United narrowly avoided a new embarrassment in the FA Cup tournament, as they made no mistake visiting Wigan Athletic: 0-2

Manchester United traveled to the DW Stadium with a depleted squad to take on Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup. A considerable number of players had to miss this cup match, including former Ajax players Lisandro Martínez, Christian Eriksen and Antony. Former Feyenoord player Tyrell Malacia is still part of Manchester United’s full infirmary. Despite the upcoming Africa Cup, André Onana still took his place under the bar.

Early in the match, Wigan Athletic posed the first threat. Thelo Aasgaard had the chance to put the League One team ahead, but Onana kept his team afloat. It turned out to be the main action. Manchester United gradually increased the pressure and created opportunities to take the lead. Scott McTominay almost succeeded, but poked the ball just next to it.

Shortly after McTominay’s chance, Manchester United took the lead. After good preparatory work from Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot had the opportunity to find a gap in the far bottom corner: 0-1. Rashford could have provided the second goal himself, but was stopped by the post. Rasmus Højlund also failed to definitively tilt the cup match in United’s favor before half-time.

Easily given penalty

In the second half, the margin of one goal remained on the scoreboard for a long time. Slowly but surely, belief grew on the Wigan side, but an upset did not happen. Bruno Fernandes won a penalty and then made no mistake from eleven meters: 0-2. Manchester United had more chances to achieve a larger victory, but failed to do so.

Manchester United will face either Newport County or Eastleigh in the next round.

Score progress: 0-1 (22′) D. Dalot, 0-2 (74′) B. Fernandes (penalty)
