Manchester United considering shocking swap deal involving Antony

Antony was signed from Ajax in 2022 for £82m but has struggled to make an impact in his time in United's first team

Manchester United are looking to bolster their frontline with a surprise swap deal between Antony and Flamengo striker Gabigol Barbosa, according to reports. Antony was signed from Ajax in 2022 for £82m. However, he has struggled to make an impact in his time in the first team and has been the subject of domestic abuse allegations. Gabigol, on the other hand, has scored 18 goals in his first season at Flamengo, and is available for a reported fee of £20m.

Since joining Manchester United, Antony has failed to make a lasting impression and is yet to score or assist in the league this season. It has been reported that Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag is willing to agree to a swap for Antony in order to secure the services of Barbosa. Barbosa has rediscovered his best form in Brazil, scoring 152 goals in just five years since leaving Inter Milan.

The lack of attacking talent at Manchester United is a major issue for Ten Hag. The likes of Marcus Rashford and recent summer recruit Rasmus Hojlund have been unable to find the net. That’s why the club is actively looking for value-for-money deals to strengthen their attack ahead of the January window.

Other Manchester United targets

In addition to Barbosa, there are other names on United’s radar too. Porto forward Mehdi Taremi, who will be out of contract next summer, is reportedly being targeted by the club. Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen are two names that have also been mentioned, although they could be expensive. This potential swap deal is a sign of United’s ambition to turn around their season and improve their goal-getting capabilities.
