As Manchester City returns to action in the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool, six of their World Cup players are named to the starting lineup. Only one young player, midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, is part of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s stronger-than-usual lineup for this early stage of the competition. Injury has sidelined Roberto Firmino. Mohamed Salah, who is playing in just his fourth League Cup overall and first since the finals in October 2020, is part of his forward line. Also included are Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho.

Erling Halaand puts Manchester City in an early lead. In possession of the ball on the left, Kevin De Bruyne advances it to Erling Haaland, who crosses it for Joe Gomez, who is caught off guard, to head home.
In the 20th minute, Fabio Carvalho, a midfielder for Liverpool, equalised by putting a pass from James Milner past Stefan Ortega, the goalkeeper for City. Riyad Mahrez’s brilliantly timed shot that struck the bottom corner of the net gave City the lead once more minutes after the break.Their advantage was short-lived, however, as Liverpool quickly marched back in the opposite direction, with forward Mohamed Salah tying the score once more to make it 2-2.
Following a quick corner play from City, defender Nathan Ake raced off around the back to head the ball past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher as de Bruyne swung the ball into the area. Salah and Nunez attempted to bring Liverpool even once more, but City held on to secure their place in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal draw happens right after this game, so the Manchester team won’t have to wait long to find out who they’ll play in the next round.
