Bayer Leverkusen are at the top of the Bundesliga table with 2 points ahead of 2nd-placed Bayern Munich. A big part of that success can be credited to their 20-year-old star player Florian Wirtz. The youngster made his way into the first team back in 2020. From there, he became the target of several big clubs in England, Germany, and Spain. His current contract with Leverkusen ends in 2027. Hence, he will not come cheap for the newly interested parties – Chelsea and Manchester City.
Chelsea and Manchester City have joined a number of teams from all around Europe to sign Bayer Leverkusen youngster Florian Wirtz. The 20-year-old forward was the target of several clubs from Germany, England, and Spain in the summer transfer window. Other than Chelsea and Man City, three other English clubs – Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Arsenal are ready to go all out for Wirtz. Barcelona and Bayern Munich are two other big clubs interested in Wirtz. However, the player’s current deal with Leverkusen ends in 2027.
Hence, if any of these European giants want to bring in Wirtz, they will have to empty their pockets. Wirtz made his debut with Bayer Leverkusen back in 2020 at only 17 years of age. He’s been able to solidify his place in the first team. In these 3 years, he’s made more than 100 appearances for Leverkusen. He has also been featured 12 times for the Germany national team. Unfortunately, the young forward missed last year’s World Cup due to a serious knee issue.
However, this season, he has been a pivotal part of Bundesliga’s table-topper team Bayer Leverkusen. He has been involved in 12 goals so far this season by scoring 4 times while assisting 8 times in 12 Spartans in Bundesliga. In their most recent Bundesliga win against Freiburg, Wirtz scored an amazing goal to open the scresheet. Talking about the amazing goal, Leverkusen coach Xavi Alonso said, “I don’t think I’ve seen a goal that special from him so far. The dribble, the dribble, the dribble and at the end the shot.”
Coach Alonso agrees that Wirtz is a rare talent. About the 20-year-old, he said, “We spoke about Flo recently, the things he does, I can’t teach him these things, just like today. There’s only a few players in the Bundesliga who can do this.” Apparently, Manchester City think that Wirtz can be a good choice for Kevin De Bruyne’s successor. Reportedly, Wirtz is also interested in working with Man City coach Pep Guardiola. However, he could also be inspired by former teammate Kai Havertz and join Chelsea.
