Lionel Messi on Saturday said he has “no doubt” about Inter Miami’s success next season as he presented his 8th Ballon d’Or to his newest fanbase. However, Messi’s confidence about Inter Miami might make the Herons’ fans experience a ‘Deja vu’ moment. When Messi was the captain at Barcelona in 2018, he had promised to bring the Champions League back to Camp Nou in a captain’s speech. But Messi couldn’t deliver on the promise as Barcelona is yet to win a Champions League since 2014-15. It remains to be seen if his promise holds any worth this time around.

Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami organised a friendly with New York City FC to celebrate Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or. However, the Herons suffered a 2-1 defeat in the match to mar the celebration.

Although, the ‘Noche d’Or’ or “Golden Night” friendly did not put a dent to Messi’s hopes of performing well next year. Messi thanked his fans, club and teammates for turning out for the occasion. Messi presented his Golden Ball trophy to the Miami faithful before the match. However, the Inter Miami fans were left disappointed by the teams display in the match.

“First of all I want to say thank you for coming, for this beautiful ceremony. For me, it’s something amazing to share this moment with you. I’ve been here for a short period, but it feels like a long time,he said at the pre-game ceremony.

Like I said at the beginning, I never doubted that we were going to enjoy our time here, and now I have no doubts that next year is going to be even better. We are going to keep enjoying, keep winning titles, and I hope you can support us like you have since I arrived. It has been amazing and next year we have important tournaments to face together. Thank you everyone and good night,” he added.
