José Ángel Iribar has contributed a lot to Spanish football. Athletic Bilbao has also invited clubs from the professional level to the grassroots level to pay tribute, by wearing black. The legendary goalkeeper began playing for Athletic Club in 1962. He was also playing when the dictator Franco was in power in Spain.

Iribar played more than 600 games with Athletic Club, twice taking home the Spanish Cup and three times finishing in second place. He also led Spain to victories in the 1964 UEFA European Championship, which they would not repeat until 2008, and the Ricardo Zamora Trophy (awarded to the nation’s top goalkeeper) in the 1969–70 campaign.

Athletic Club invites the goalie to wear a black strip for the official photo of the starting XI, even if they are subsequently required to play in another colour, if it is not practical for some teams due to outfield players’ kits, for example.
A large number of professional goalkeepers from around the world have already expressed their desire to participate in the effort.
