Kolkata Derby postponed: East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan Super Giant ISL 2024 clash rescheduled

The previous clash between the two side ended in a highly contested 2-2 draw.

New challenges have emerged for the highly anticipated Kolkata Derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, as reports suggest the match might face cancellation. Scheduled for Sunday, March 10, the clash between these two Kolkata football giants in the ISL 2024 is in jeopardy.

Why was the Kolkata Derby postponed?

On March 10, West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has called for a significant political rally and meeting in Kolkata. This event demands substantial police presence, straining the capacity of the Kolkata Police to handle additional responsibilities such as managing a high-profile football match.

Consequently, the Kolkata Police have expressed their inability to manage both events concurrently, prompting the postponement of the football fixture.

When will the Kolkata Derby be played?

According to some reports the ISL has reached out to authorities, proposing alternative dates for the match, either on March 9 (Saturday) or March 11 (Monday).

Considering East Bengal’s prior game against FC Goa is on March 6, the rescheduled match cannot be likely held on March 11. The logistical challenge of travelling back from their away fixture and preparing for another match within a 60-hour timeframe presents a significant obstacle for East Bengal. However, Mohun Bagan is also scheduled to travel to Kerala on the 12th with their game being on the 13th of March.

Furthermore, the anticipated influx of attendees for the political gathering on March 9 necessitates heightened security measures, making it less feasible to hold the rescheduled match on that day.

Hence, March 11 emerges as the more plausible date for the postponed Kolkata Derby, allowing sufficient time for both logistical and security arrangements.
