Kerala government outlines 100 crores budget to host Lionel Messi-led Argentina NT in India

The Kerala government has earmarked a budget of 100 crores for hosting the Argentina National Team led by Lionel Messi in India in October 2025.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has shown a keen interest in playing friendly matches in Kerala, with the event scheduled for October 2025. Initially planned for June, the matches were delayed due to monsoon-related considerations. Despite the optimistic outlook from the Kerala government, a significant challenge looms in the form of financial constraints associated with bringing the renowned Lionel Messi and the team to India. Nevertheless, reports suggest that the Kerala government has outlined a budget of 100 crores to facilitate the presence of the iconic World Cup-winning team in India.

Reports suggest that friendly matches of Argentinian national team in Kerala will kick off on October 25, 2025, with three matches scheduled. Efforts are underway to bring the FIFA World Cup 2022 champions, the Argentinian squad, on board, although the opposing teams remain undecided.

Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman revealed to ‘Mathrubhumi News’ the plans to potentially host one of the matches at the upcoming stadium in Payyanad, Malappuram. Discussions are ongoing to explore holding matches in other cities within the state. Abdurahiman emphasized that the government aims to fund the event through sponsorships, ensuring minimal financial impact on the state.

With a projected budget of Rs 100 crores, organizers plan to raise funds through television rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships. Discussions with the Argentine Football Association members are expected to finalize event details. Football experts from Argentina will assist the Kerala government in its ‘Goal Project’ this year.

The Kerala government aims to construct a FIFA-standard stadium in Payyanad using Rs 75 crores from the KIIFB funds. Once completed, the new stadium will replace the existing one for training purposes.
