Italy legend Daniele De Rossi appointed AS Roma manager after Jose Mourinho’s unceremonious exit

At the age of 40, the former Italy international returns to his former club, where he spent the bulk of his playing career.

Former Italy footballer Daniele De Rossi was on Tuesday named as AS Roma’s new coach. The announcement came shortly after AS Roma sacked their previous manager Jose Mourinho.

At the age of 40, the former Italy international returns to his former club, where he spent the bulk of his playing career. “AS Roma are pleased to confirm that Daniele De Rossi has been appointed as head coach until 30 June 2024,” said Roma in a statement.

De Rossi will take charge of the club just hours after manager Jose Mourinho was dismissed on Tuesday morning following an unconvincing third season in charge in Rome. De Rossi won the 2006 World Cup with Italy, but his trophy cabinet in almost 20 years as a Roma player has been less impressive, with only two Italian Cups and one Italian Super Cup to his name.

Jose Mourinho sacked by Serie A club AS Roma after string of bad results

After less than a full season in Argentina with Boca Juniors, he completed his playing career in early 2020. As a coach, he has little experience, with his only previous stint at SPAL lasting only four months last season, which ended with the club being demoted to Serie C. Roma is currently ninth in the Serie A table, five points out of the Champions League spots, after losing 3-1 to AC Milan on Sunday.
