Here are the top five goals from the Indian Super League 2021-22 season till now.

Mirlan Murzaev vs Odisha FC

Chennaiyin FC have really struggled to find goals this season. A problem that they have carried forward from last season. Head coach Bozidar Bandovic has tried many options but nothing seems to work properly for them. He trusted Rahim Ali early on in the season then he tried out Lukasz Gikiewicz and finally changed the system and played Mirlan Murzaev and Lallianzuala Chhangte upfront.

The change in formation did bore fruit for the Marina Machans as Murzaev got into the scoresheet with a fantastic long-range effort. It was in the second half and the Marina Machans were already a goal up against Odisha FC. A great counterattack from Chennaiyin FC saw Murzaev get the ball unmarked near the halfway line as he fired it past a diving Kamaljit Singh. It was the first goal scored by the Kyrgyz Republic international on Indian soil as he also celebrated the goal in style with some breathe taking cartwheel.

Adrian Luna vs FC Goa

After a defeat in their opening game against ATK Mohun Bagan, Kerala Blasters have been on a roll in this campaign of the ISL. They are league leaders for a reason as they have shown great tenacity and consistency to maintain the level of play. Luna has easily been one of their chief architects this season. He has the technique, perseverance and character to succeed and lead the team to great heights.

The game was against FC Goa and the Blasters were already a goal up. Around the 19th minute, mark Alavaro Vazquez played a short pass to Luna who glanced at the goal and pulled the trigger. The ball swerved it and struck the inside of the far post beating a diving Dheeraj Singh and after kissing the post, it rippled the inside of the net. It was an audacious strike from a sensational player and is definitely one of the top five goals from this season.

Alvaro Vazquez vs Mumbai City FC

Speaking of the Kerala Blasters and their rise, Spanish striker Alvaro Vazquez has had a major role to play till now. He came to India with a big profile and started off slowly. While people were starting to feel that it was another striker who will remain an underperformer in Yellow, Vazquez started showing his true colours. The former Swansea City man who featured in the Premier League is known for his busy nature. Vazquez always likes to stay involved in the game. Hence he is always amongst goals and assists.

It was a very crucial game against defending champions, Mumbai City FC as Sahal Abdul Samad has already scored the opening goal to settle the nerves. But the best was yet to come as Harmanjot Khabra and Jeakson Singh had a give and go on the flank. Khabra played the ball back to Jeakson who drilled in a hopeful cross. Vazquez who saw the ball coming his way positioned himself to precision and got his foot through the ball as he struck with real venom to send it past Mohammad Nawaz. It was a great display of awareness and technique from the Spaniard as he came up with a volley right from the top drawer.

In any other season, Liston Colaco’s thunder strike against FC Goa would probably be the ‘Goal of the season”. But this has been a season like that where players have scored some sensational goals and we just had to place it in the runners up spot. ATK Mohun Bagan had already set the tone with their persistent attacks against FC Goa. However, not a single person thought that a thunderbolt from long range will break the deadlock for the Mariners.

Hugo Boumous won back possession as he calmly spread it wide to Liston Colaco who took a few touches lost his marker with a smooth cut in and then pulled the trigger. The shot had great venom, swerve and left Dheeraj Singh with only questions. Before the FC Goa custodian could react the ball was already in the back of the net. The ball had a velocity of 181 kmph and is the sixth-fastest shot in football. He joined a list of elite footballers that also include former Bayern Munich legend, Arjen Robben.

Greg Stewart vs Kerala Blasters

Greg Stewart’s arrival has completely changed the scenario for the Jamshedpur FC this season. He came to Indian soil right after a two year stint with Steven Gerard’s rangers FC and he proved his mettle instantly. he has scored some sensational goals this season and has been a metronome for the Men of Steel this season. Owen Coyle’s men are one of the favourites to reach the playoffs as of now and a lot of credit goes to Stewart and his exceptional heroics till now.

In the game against Kerala Blasters, the sensational Scotsman handed the Men of Steel a very important lead. But more importantly scored an absolute screamer of a freekick. A reckless foul allowed Stewart to place the ball 40 yards away from the goal. The Blasters were also confident that the Scotsman will send the ball in for a teammate in the penalty area who only Puitea made up a one man wall. But Stewart being the genius that he is noticed Blasters custodian Prabshukan Gill taking one step too many on his left leaving a small window on the near post. Stewart took his chance and what unfolded was history. The ball curled past Puitea and then cut back just in time to creep into the net before Prabshukan could do anything to keep it out.

The goal has received global recognition and even Stewart’s fans back in Scotland have celebrated it. It was a sensational strike by a great player who is making a difference for the Men of Steel this season. Coyle will hope that Stewart keeps going strong and they make it to their first ISL Playoffs.
