ISL 2021-22: SC East Bengal were sensational to hold defending champions Mumbai City FC to a goalless draw in their latest Indian Super League clash. SC East Bengal team management had to part ways with former head coach Manolo Diaz. When assistant coach Renedy Singh filled up the role of an interim head coach, there were plenty of challenges ahead of him. But the former India national team captain did not back down and always showed great belief and trust in his players. Ever since Renedy’s arrival in the last two matches, the Kolkata giants have shown great resolve in defence and midfield. The entire defensive organization has looked way more solid.

But this draw against Mumbai City has a different meaning for the players as they did it with an all Indian backline and only one foreigner in the starting eleven. These factors have made Renedy Singh very proud of his team.

“I’m really proud of them. You have seen the game, I’m really proud of the boys,” Renedy Singh began the press conference. “We played with one foreigner, can you imagine the opponent team was playing with the top four foreigners. Even the Indian boys the way they have played along with Daniel Chima Chukwu at the end is commendable. This is a top-notch performance from the boys. Yes, we could do better with the ball but there is hardly any time left in the end but then I’m really proud of the way they have executed the game plan.”

The young Indian tactician who is filling up for SC East Bengal’s new head coach Mario Rivera feels that the major takeaway from this goalless draw against Mumbai City FC is the belief to achieve great things.

“If we keep working hard, even with one foreigner we can do well.  We all have to believe in it. Mumbai is the best-attacking side in the league, even playing against the best-attacking side, the way we have defended and gave no clear-cut chance to them. Of course, we had defended deep. There was no clear-cut chance we could have nicked it at the end,” Renedy explained.

Lastly, He was graceful in taking in criticism as he admitted that SC East Bengal did not look fluid while going in attack. He shared that he had very little time and thought of working on the defensive organization than anything else. He also highlighted how he needed more options among foreigners or more skilful Indian talents to challenge against the likes of Mumbai City.

“I had only six or seven days to work with the team. And then to play attacking game we need top quality technique player. But yes, the boys have defended well, there is no complaint at all. So it’s no point complaining about what we could do, what we could have not done. I think it’s time to concentrate and defend better in the next match. Three matches in seven days, it’s not easy at all. So we have to regroup again. Defend better and go for the attack. It’s good to see, that injured players are coming back and available for selection, “ Renedy reasoned.
