Inter’s 4-2 win over Empoli had seen them lead the league for 48 hours but Stefano Pioli’s side reacted in the perfect way on Sunday despite falling behind in the 38th minute.

Danko Lazović’s cross found the on-rushing Davide Faraoni at the back post and he headed home to stun Milan and give the hosts the lead. It looked as if the visitors were going into the break behind until Tonali equalised with pretty much the last kick of the half.

Rafael Leão beat his man at the byline and forced the ball across goal to be touched in by the Italian midfielder.

It was the same pair that combined again to move Milan ahead in the second half as this time Leão span away on the counter attack and played a pin-point into the path of Tonali to tap home from six yards out.

Alessandro Florenzi then came off the bench to wrap things up with four minutes to go, bursting forward and playing a one-two with Junior Messias before driving the ball into the bottom corner.

Milan move two points clear of Inter with two games left to play, with Pioli’s men having to face Atalanta and Sassuolo. Simone Inzaghi’s team come up against Cagliari and Sampdoria.
