ATK Mohun Bagan got off to a strong start, but Hyderabad FC soon gained more possession and took control of the midfield. Yet after the 15th minute, the hosts suddenly picked up the pace and enjoyed their finest attacking stretch of the half.
Before Manvir Singh’s flash of genius caused the ball to ping off the crossbar, Andre Martins initially sent the ball sailing beyond the post from a distance. Dimitri Petratos then watched his shot slide across the goal. Hyderabad FC managed to withstand all the pressure and make a few crosses, but their efforts lacked both quality and intent.
ATK Mohun Bagan appeared impressive and produced some exquisite chances, however none were converted into goals. The closest attempt was missed by Slavko Damjanovic in the 82nd minute with a header. Carl McHugh also made a late try, but his header missed the goal. Although Hyderabad FC made an effort and weathered the late onslaught, their play in the attacking third lacked precision. The game entered the extra time!
Seconds away from the extra time break, Nikhil Poojary’s crucial interception kept Gallego’s cross away from Liston Colaco, who was right in front of goal. Tiring legs on both sides tried to force the issue in the second period, but the deadlock remained intact as the game went to penalties.
In the shootout, Kaith saved Siverio’s penalty before Ogbeche fired his spot-kick onto the post. Brendan Hamill, who was brought on in the 114th minute, missed for ATKMB, but they had enough of a cushion to seal the win in a game they dominated. Having avenged the outcome of last season’s semi-final against Hyderabad FC, ATKMB are a win away from lifting their maiden Hero ISL title when they face Bengaluru FC in Goa on Saturday, March 18.
