Uruguay’s squad has a good blend of youth and experience, and the former champions are expected to be a hard nut to crack at the World Cup. Some of the notable inclusions in the squad include Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde and Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez – all of whom are first-timers at the World Cup.

Veterans like Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godin, Martin Caceres, Jose Gimenez, Rodrigo Bentancur and Fernando Muslera among other feature in the provisional squad and there are no surprising exclusions.

Meanwhile, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo’s inclusion in the Uruguayan squad has caused a bit of controversy. Araujo suffered an injury in Uruguay’s September friendly clash with Iran, with initial reports hinting at a minor problem for him.

Barcelona sent the player for surgery, with an estimated recovery time of 6-7 weeks but Uruguay were allegedly against the move. They wanted the defender to rest and allow the injury to heal naturally. However, now that he has been included in the squad, it could offend the Barcelona board who now cannot avail the services of the player until 2023.
