FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: How does a team gain qualification from its group?

The European countries were divided into 10 groups from Group A to J. The team that finishes first in its group gets a direct qualification for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup while the teams that finish 2nd have to undergo a playoff tournament.

Three more teams will seal their place at the end of the play-offs in March.

FIFA World Cup 2022: How do the play-offs work?

The play-offs take place from March 24 to 29, with 10 group runners-up joined by the two best group winners from the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League overall ranking that have neither qualified directly as group winners nor entered the play-offs already as group runners-up.

These 12 teams will be drawn into three play-off paths for one-off semi-finals and a final. The three path winners qualify for the World Cup.

France was in Group D and has qualified already with 15 points from 7 games. Their closest opponent is Finald who has 11 points from 7 games.

Denmark has been exceptional in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. They have won all their 9 games so far and have gained a direct qualification in the Qatar World Cup 2022.

Under the new coach Hansi Flick, Germany has prospered. They have lost just 1 game and have 24 points from 9 matches. They are 9 points clear of their closest opponent- North Macedonia with just 1 game to go.

Brazil is the 1st South American team to have qualified for the Qatar World Cup 2022. They had an amazing streak and went unbeaten so far. However, a big match against Argentina awaits, it will not spoil their chances.

Brazil has 34 points from 12 matches while 2nd placed Argentina has 28 points from 12 matches.

The top-ranked Belgium team has gained qualification after defeating Estonia 3-1 in Group E. They now have 19 points from 7 games and are still unbeaten in their group. With just 1 match to go against 2nd placed Wales, they can only spoil their chances of earning a playoffs spot for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Serbia defeated Portugal 2:1 in order to qualify for the World Cup Finals automatically. Ronaldo & Co. will be heading to the playoffs in order to eventually try and win a place for the 2022 World Cup.

Spain edged a narrow 1:0 victory against Sweden, Both the teams were fighting for the top and for automatic qualification. Sweden missed out on it, but they will have a chance to claim a place through the playoffs.

Heading onto the final qualifiers fixture against Bulgaria, Switzerland needed a favour from Northern Ireland. The Swiss did their part by winning 4-0 against Bulgaria and Northern Ireland in Belfast held the European Champions, Italy to a 0-0 draw allowing Switzerland to book their ticket for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

It was more or less confirmed for England but they stamped their authority against San Marino by scoring 10 goals and cruising their way into the World Cup in Qatar next year. The Three Lions have been at their dominant best throughout the campaign as they finished with eight wins and two draws.
