The deadline to announce the 26-man final squad is November 14.

The English players on the fringes of the national team like James Maddison, Kieran Trippier and Aaron Ramsdale among others will now have to wait for a longer time to know if they are in the plans for the World Cup. Southgate’s decision also means we do not know for sure if injured players like Reece James and Kalvin Phillips are a part of the squad or have been officially ruled out.

Reece James is a major doubt for the tournament after picking up a injury during his club Chelsea’s Uefa Champions League clash against AC Milan. The pacey full back is an integral part of Gareth Southgate’s side and if he misses the World Cup flight, it will be a big blow for the Three Lions. Meanwhile, Manchester City mid-fielder, Kalvin Phillips suffered a dislocated shoulder last month and is almost certain to miss the big event.
England is placed in Group B at the World Cup alongside Iran, the United States, and Wales. They will be first seen in action on November 21 against Iran at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan. The Three Lions will then take on the U.S.A on November 25, before facing neighbors Wales on November 29.
