On Sunday, the Catalans defeated their neighbors 4-2 to win their first domestic championship in four years. While Barcelona players were celebrating the La Liga championship in the stadium of their neighborhood rivals, Espanyol, enraged supporters chased them off the field.

After the final whistle, the Barca players and manager Xavi gathered in the center circle for a celebration that resembled a “ring of roses.” But relegation-threatened Espanyol supporters who skipped security to rush on and disturb the festivities ruined the event. The Barcelona players were directly in their path as some of them were spotted tossing chairs and bottles.

Barca players were so terrified that they immediately ran for the tunnel to get away from the enraged mob. During the hurry, one backroom employee was observed collapsing to the ground. The raucous pitch invaders then turned on Espanyol’s unpopular board once Barcelona’s stars had fled. Later, it was reported that all of the Barcelona players and personnel had made it out unscathed. Xavi later commented, ‘It’s normal to celebrate but I understand that we are not at home and we can’t be disrespectful.’

FC Barcelona win La Liga 2022/23

Two goals from Robert Lewandowski gave Xavi Hernandez’s team the lead. Also scoring for the visitors were Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde in their triumph over Espanyol. As a result, Barcelona now has a 14-point lead over rival and previous champion Real Madrid. They clinched the trophy with four games remaining after only losing three occasions all season.

After their triumph, Xavi spoke about their La Liga title win. He said, ‘It’s a great feeling. It’s a job well done. This started in July and after months of work and sacrifice we have achieved our aim. The fans and the club deserve it, it gives us stability and security that things are being done well. We have sealed La Liga with a fantastic performance. We were brilliant tonight. The team relaxed at the end and Espanyol showed pride.’

Barcelona pushed a lot of buttons to fund a significant expenditure in the transfer market last summer, which was a huge gamble. Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Kounde, among others, all arrived for significant prices. Additionally, free agents Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie received delectable contracts. However, Barca seized control of La Liga early on and never let go as Real missed numerous opportunities to reduce the gap.

The title victory by Xavi will undoubtedly overshadow Barcelona’s failures in Europe, which included their elimination from the Champions League and their elimination by Man United from the Europa League. Additionally, they lost to Real in the Spanish Cup semifinal.
