The 37-year-old’s treble was his second in his past three Premier League appearances and took him to 21 goals for the season, going through the 20 barrier for a 16th consecutive campaign.
Ronaldo moved to 99 Premier League goals in his career, and United could only thank him for sparing them a potentially embarrassing afternoon.

Cristiano Ronaldo was at his brilliant best as his hat-trick helped Manchester United beat Norwich 3-2. Jesse Lingard returned to the Manchester United XI with Ralf Rangnick’s side looking to put pressure on the race for fourth.
But it was the Canaries who had the first chance of the game with their opening attack as Teemu Pukki had an effort saved well by David de Gea. United though, rode their luck and then scored immediately at the other end through Cristiano Ronaldo.
They then doubled their lead on the 33 minute mark with Ronaldo leaping above the visiting defence and heading in. Norwich got one back right on the stroke of half time however as Kieran Dowell pulled one back for the east Anglia side.
And amazingly they got back on level terms just after the break as Pukki finished well. United were on the ropes now but cometh the hour, cometh the man as Ronaldo scored with 15 minutes to go to bag his 50th career hat trick with a brilliant free kick.
