Celta Vigo 1-2 Real Madrid Live: Real Madrid go 12 points clear at the top
Karim Benzema scored two penalties, and missed one, as Real Madrid survived a scare at Celta Vigo to extend their lead at the top of LaLiga to 12 points. VAR appeared to have it out for the hosts at the Balaídos this evening with the technology playing a part in Real Madrid being awarded a penalty in the 19th minute.
Nolito was at fault taking out Éder Militão which allowed Karim Benzema the opportunity to dispatch the spot-kick and pick up his 24th league goal of the season. Celta had started brightly before that and Iago Aspas thought he had equalised immediately with a free-kick but was denied by a stunning save by Thibaut Courtois.
Thiago Galhardo thought he had equalised four minutes before the break with a header before VAR reared it’s head again to disallow with Aspas deemed offside in the build-up. Seven minutes after the break Celta equalised – and this time it counted.

Javi Galan’s cross picked out the unmarked Nolito six yards from goal and he redeemed himself with a smart header to level proceedings. In the 64th minute there was a rare LaLiga sight as Benzema was given a second chance from 12 yards out after Rodrygo had been fouled in the box but this time Matías Dituro was equal to it.
That wasn’t to matter moments later as Carlo Ancelotti’s side were awarded yet another penalty after Ferland Mendy was tripped by Kevin Vázquez. This time Benzema sent Dituro the wrong way to restore Real’s lead. Los Blancos open up a huge gap on second-placed Sevilla who travel to face Barcelona at the Camp Nou tomorrow.
