Bochum took on Monchengladbach at their home turf in Vonovia Ruhrstadion for the 27th round match of the ongoing edition of the German top flight. The visitors were inching closer to a victory with a 2-0 lead, when a horrific incident brought the game to a standstill in the 70th minute.

Someone from the angered Bochum crowd threw a full beer glass on the pitch, which landed straight in the head of linesman Christian Gittelmann, who had to be taken off the pitch. The game was subsequently called off given the hostile situation at the stadium.

VfL Bochum subsequently apologized for the shambolic behaviour of their fans by saying “We can only formally apologise to linesman Christian Gittelmann. A highly embarrassing and bitter evening for us. An extremely stupid action from an idiotic fan.”
The sporting director of Borussia Monchengladbach, Roland Virkus also echoed the same feelings by saying “Things like this should never happen. It angers you when a good game of football has to end like this.”
As for the match itself, both teams played out a 0-0 stalemate in the first half but the Foals went all guns blazing in the second half. Breel Embolo and Alassane Plea scored for them to make the scoreline 2-0 before the unfortunate incident.
