The ball went agonizingly wide many times, and exquisite crosses that would have resulted in tap-ins were cleared at the very last second by the Almera defenders. Despite one of Barcelona’s best-attacking efforts in quite some time, the game was still goalless at halftime. But football is strange in that sense, and the Blaugrana needed to score and clinch the game in the second half.

Barcelona wasted little time in the second half, breaking the tie after only three minutes. Ousmane Dembélé cut inside with his left foot, beat three players in the area, and slotted the ball into the net to give the home team a well-deserved lead. Sergio Busquets passed to him, and the France winger cut in from the right touchline, twisting past three Almeria players before firing into the far corner.

He should have added a second five minutes later, but after beating Almeria keeper Martinez, he sought to overcome the rest of the defence as well and failed to finish or find a frantic Lewandowski waiting for the ball.

The Blaugrana extended their advantage a little more than 10 minutes later, as a cross from Jordi Alba found Ansu Fati inside the box, and after his volley was saved by Fernando, Frenkie De Jong was first to the rebound to score the second.

The hosts kept attacking and attempt to score more goals, but despite the Blaugrana’s best efforts, the ball avoided going in. They effortlessly sailed to the finish line. With five minutes remaining, Andreas Christensen replaced a tearful Gerard Piqué, who earned a standing ovation from the whole stadium and was embraced by his teammates as he exited the Camp Nou pitch for the final time as a player.

Barcelona simply ran out of time in the dying stages, and the final whistle signalled the end of a memorable night at Camp Nou. The 2-0 result doesn’t do justice to Blaugrana’s superb performance, but what matters most is that Gerard Piqué had a deserved send-off for his remarkable career. A fantastic moment to pay tribute to an icon.
