Captains of international sides and top journalists of all FIFA-associated nations vote for the award. The Ballon d’Or 2023 looks like it’s gonna be a nail-biting affair, as organisers of the annual football award predict a close race between Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.

The Ballon d’Or 2023 will awarded on Monday (October 30) evening with Lionel Messi favourite to claim the prize while Erling Haaland is also in a race to secure the award. However, the editor-in-chief of France Football Vincent Garcia has revealed that the race is going to go down the wire between the players.

Garcia was asked about the Ballon d’Or race. “Very, very close,” Garcia replied. And rightly so.

Messi & Haaland

The two main contenders of the award have had major accolades to show the previous season, and have stamped their claim on the award.

Messi was the star of the show when Argentina won the World Cup in 2022, showing he was one of the best players ever. It was the first time Argentina had won the tournament in 36 years, since 1986 when they last won it under Maradona. He also had a great season in France, winning the Ligue 1 with PSG before signing for Inter Miami for free last summer.

Haaland had a great season after leaving Borussia Dortmund last year. He won the Premier League Golden Boot, breaking Alan Shearer’s record of 34 goals. Haaland scored 36 goals in the season, helping City win their third Premier League title in a row. He won the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League to top it off, winning the treble in his first season his first season.
