East Bengal had their first chance at the gaol as early as the 16th minute when Semboi Haokip’s header was parried away by Vishal Kaith diving across his left. Few minutes laters East Bengal were on attack again through Cleiton Silva who was again denied. East Bengal looked like a stronger opponents in the first half. Ivan Gonzalez denied Hugo Boumous of a deserving gaol with last minute defending. Although ATKMB were on the attack from the first minute they were not clinical enough to get a real chance out of them. Despite not being any goals in the first half, Derby served all the purpose in terms of an electric game. Both the teams lacked finishing as the first half ended in a draw.

The second half saw a more lethal ATK Mohun Bagan who scored twice to win the sixth derby in the recent years. It took them only eleven minutes to register the first goal. Hugo Boumous sent the home crowd into frenzy with a long ranger that rendered Kamaljit Singh helpless as the East bengal defenders stared in dismayal. Liston Colaco could have made the score up by another soon enough, but to the relief of the Red and Gold fans he shot it just wide. However, the relief was short lived, as Manvir Singh found the second goal for the mariners to secure the win.
