The thought of a rematch with a current UFC champion has been rejected by Alex Pereira.

At the moment, Pereira is aiming for the light heavyweight title. He will compete in the co-main event of UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the vacant 205-pound title. On November 11, he’ll share the Octagon with Jiri Prochazka.

Poatan’s Plans Do Not Seem To Include A Rematch With Current UFC Champion

A former middleweight champion in the UFC, “Poatan” is. Many have questioned whether he will eventually return to the weight class. If he does, it won’t be a matchup with the 185-pound champion right now.

In their fight at UFC 276 back in July 2022, Alex Pereira and Sean Strickland were both submitted in the opening frame. Since then, Strickland has worked out with Pereira, and after defeating Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia, he currently holds the middleweight championship. When Pereira appeared on “The MMA Hour,” Ariel Helwani questioned him about if he would be open to facing Strickland again.

“No, no, it’s not in my plans,” Pereira said through a translator. “My plan was if Israel Adesanya was still the champion there, maybe win the light heavyweight belt and make a fight with him, but now, no. Sean is my friend, and also, it’s not a weight cut I’m looking to do. I always make that weight, never miss weight or anything like that, but it is a hard weight cut. So, right now it’s not in my interest.”

The first title defence for Strickland has not been formally announced. An immediate rematch with Adesanya makes sense, according to UFC CEO Dana White, though he did not specifically state that this would be the plan.
