AFC Asian Cup: Sunil Chhetri upbeat for Uzbekistan tie after heartbreaking defeat to Australia

Chhetri missed an open header in the first half, something he would hope to change in the next match against Uzbekistan.

Indian captain Sunil Chhetri on Sunday turned his focus to their second match of AFC Asian Cup against Uzbekistan. India on Saturday lost its opening encounter of the AFC Asian Cup against Australia 0-2.

India had a bright start to the AFC Asian Cup campaign against powerful Australia. The Indians held the Socceroos to a goalless draw in the first half. However, the floodgates of the Indian defence opened in the second half with goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s rookie mistake handed the Aussies the lead. A second goal in the 72nd minute secured the tie for the Socceroos.

Speaking on AIFF website after the match, Indian captain Sunil Chhetri said, “It’s a mixed bag of feelings right now. Once we watch the videos, perhaps we will gain more confidence and work on the things that we could have done better.”

Chhetri missed an open header in the first half, something he would hope to change in the next match against Uzbekistan.

Speaking about the next game, Chhetri said, “Uzbekistan are not Australia, but they’re a good side nonetheless. So it will be a big challenge in that game too.”
