Scott McTominay scored twice as Scotland defeated Spain to claim victory and control of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. At Hampden Park, the midfielder for Manchester United, who scored twice in Saturday’s 3-0 triumph against Cyprus, scored the game’s first goal after just seven minutes.

McTominay also scored twice off the bench in a 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday and was the catalyst for what will go down as a famous win and further entrench manager Steve Clarke’s view that they are a team very much on the up.

New Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made eight changes from the side that beat Norway 3-0 in Malaga at the weekend, and it showed as they battled to get any sustained momentum in the game as their hosts harried and pressed them into numerous errors.

Andy Robertson gained possession in the box and passed the ball into McTominay’s path, who then capitalised on a mistake by Pedro Porro to score his first goal. For his second goal, McTominay was the beneficiary of a superb run and cross from Kieran Tierney.

In the 75th minute, with Spain already making substitutions, Steve Clarke turned to his bench, bringing on Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney in place of the injured Kieran Tierney.

After Lyndon Dykes was replaced by Lawrence Shankland, Aaron Hickey and John McGinn were replaced by Nathan Patterson and Lewis Ferguson as Scotland continued to dominate the squad rated 10th in the world. On a tough night for the visitors when tempers occasionally threatened to flare, De la Fuente gave 33-year-old striker Joselu his first start. He hit the crossbar with a header midway through the opening period.
