Chelsea’s previous owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned during Russia vs Ukraine war by the UK government due to the suspicion of having close ties with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. During this time, his assets were frozen by the government which meant that Chelsea had to cease their financial activities. This continued till new owner Todd Boehly took over the club.

Chelsea even released a club statement that read, “The club was restricted in a number of areas including signing contracts with players and sponsorship partners, which collectively resulted in extraordinary expenses and loss of revenue.” The loss was £121.3 million which brought their total loss to a whopping £274 million in the last two campaigns.

This doesn’t include the extraordinary spending spree of £545 million Chelsea went on after Todd Boehly came to the wheel. As per the Premier League rules, they will have to bring their losses over the period of 3 years below £105 million. Otherwise, they will fall under the wrong side of the Financial Fair Play sanctions.

This indicates that Chelsea will have to sell quite a few of their players to balance out their account. To get the maximum benefit from the sales, Chelsea will have to sell homegrown players who did not cost them anything. This includes some of their best players, like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Conor Gallagher, and Mason Mount.

Some other players who will probably also be on the list of ‘players to sell’ are Hakim Ziyech, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, and Edouard Mendy. Manchester United has already shown interest in the midfielder, Mateo Kovacic, while Liverpool is leading in the race to sign the talented Mason Mount. If Chelsea put up a sale sign in their backyard, they currently have more than enough talent in their squad that their rival clubs will be very interested to sign.
