Italy Football Team: Since the Italian team won the UEFA Euro in 2020, their form has gone down, and it has not been able to come back up yet. After Italy won the Euro Cup in 2020 and Argentina won the Copa America in 2021, both teams fought for the Finalissima which was won by Argentina. After that, their form dropped so much that they even failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They have recently started their campaign in the 2024 UEFA Euro Qualifiers round.
In their first Euro Qualifiers match, they lost 1-2 against England in their home. England went up 0-2 before the end of the first half. Argentina-born Mateo Retegui debuted for Italy in this match and scored the only goal for them. Their second match in the competition was against Malta which they won 0-2. Retegui scored again in this match as he netted in the first 15 minutes into the game.
The success of introducing Retegui to their team must give more motivation to the Italian FA. They have contacted Gianluca Prestianni to play for them and are still contacting and trying to bring Maestro Puch, Pepo De La Vega, and Nicolás Capaldo in to play for them. It’s still unknown how many players have agreed or will agree, but they could just successfully bring in all of them.
