Tokyo 2020, the organising committee for the Olympic Games next year, is creating various firsts on technology and innovation front. Creating medals from recycled electronic gadgets was one big step that sent a strong message on the concept of sustainability and environment protection.
The Tokyo 2020 has set the sustainability concept of the Games as “Be better, together – For the planet and the people”. The initiative is aimed at delivering sustainable Games and showcase solution models of global sustainability challenges to people in Japan and around the world.
The organising committee of the 2020 Olympics aims to contribute toward the realisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the delivery of the Games. There is commitment to make sure the meaning of the Tokyo 2020 Games’ concepts and legacies will be passed on to future Olympic/Paralympic Games and various activities and initiatives throughout Japan and the world.

Living up to that philosophy, Tokyo 2020 has created various firsts for the Games. Insidesport.co brings to its readers five such innovations which Tokyo 2020 has shared in it’s advertisers guide:
- GREEN CULTURE: The medals are being made from recycled precious metals from cell phones donated by Japanese citizens. The organising committee has already achieved its goals to meet the demand of gold, silver and bronze medals for Olympics and Paralympics medals.
- MAN-MADE METEORS: Forget fireworks. A Japanese company is expecting to use microsatellites to create a virtual meteor shower as part of the opening ceremony.
- VIRTUAL COMPETITION: It’s not part of the games (yet), but esports will have an enormous presence in Tokyo, with one vendor building a 12-story esports arena in the heart of the city.
- IMAGING EVERYWHERE: An advanced AI facial recognition system will be in place to identify over 300,000 people at the games, including athletes, volunteers, media and other staff, making it easier to move between venues.
- ROBOTS ARE WAITING: Tokyo wants to be a leading smart city. Visitors will be greeted at the airport by robots that can provide information and handle your baggage. Hotels? Think robot concierge Taxi? Autonomous vehicles.
The Games organisers have also set 17 sustainable development goals – no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, cleaner water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace justice and strong institutions, and partnerships for the goals – to transform the world.
