Even though Sunil Chhetri himself is a huge Lionel Messi fan, for this year’s award, he voted Karim Benzema as his choice for the best player, followed by Kylian Mbappe as his second choice and Lionel Messi as third. The Indian captain has not revealed his reasons for his choices, but both Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe has had a good season last year same as Lionel Messi. Karim Benzema helped Real Madrid with their Champions League and La Liga win in 2021-22 season. He even won the French award, Ballon d’Or in October, 2022. However, he had to sit out for 2022 Qatar World Cup owing to an injury.
On the other hand, Kylian Mbappe was brlliant for both PSG and France. He was the most important player for France in the World Cup final match against Argentina as he alone scored all three goals for France. Whereas, while Lionel Messi was having a subpar season with PSG, he led his team to Argentina’s third World Cup win. Winning the World Cup was the crowning jewel to an already incredible career the player has had.

The FIFA The Best Award is chosen by the votes which are given by select journalists, coaches and national team players. Similar to Chhetri, the top choice of Indian coach Igor Stimac for the award was Croatia national team captain, Luka Modric, who led Croatia to the semifinals in the World Cup. His second choice was Lionel Messi followed by Karim Benzema in the third.
Egyptian captain Mohamed Salah and the new Hungarian captain Dominik Szoboszlai also had different choices. Salah voted Vinicius Jr. as his top choice followed by Kevin de Bruyne in second and Achraf Hakimi in third. Whereas, Szoboszlai voted for Erling Haaland as his first choice followed by Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe.
Lionel Messi was voted as first choice by many, like Sergio Busquets, Virgil van Dijk, Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski, Leonardo Bonucci, and Harry Kane. He won the award with 52 points. Followed by Kylian Mbappe who had 44 points and Karim Benzema who had 34 points.
