Amid such a situation, a few names have started doing rounds to take over the reins and one such name is James Vince, who has made it very clear that he would like to be captain of the team, but only if Root decides to step down voluntarily. “Of course [I would like to become England’s captain] if it did come up, but I know people are speculating and there are lots of ideas at the minute. It’s not something I anticipate happening and Rooty obviously has said that he wants to do it and try and take the team forward,” Vince said while talking to The Cricketer.

“I don’t think there’s an obvious alternative. If he’s still happy to do it then I feel he’s still the right man for the job. It has not taken away from his own performances with the bat, if it had it might be a different story but if he wants to do it and he’s doing well with the bat then that seems a reasonably good option to carry on,” he further added.
Besides the captaincy debate, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will also look to appoint a new head coach following the departure of Chris Silverwood, who has joined Sri Lanka. England’s next assignment is a two-match Test against New Zealand in June, and the Three Lions would want both the captaincy and the coach debate sorted out by then.
