Yash Dhull flops again: Umran Malik exposes technique

Other Delhi batters, including Vaibhav Kandpal and Himmat Singh, also faltered against J&K's seam attack lead by Umran Malik.

Yash Dhull, touted as the bright future of Indian cricket, has faced another reality check in the Ranji Trophy. Against Jammu and Kashmir’s pace attack, especially the fiery Umran Malik, Dhull’s susceptible technique was laid bare, sparking concerns about his ability to handle fast bowling.

Delhi, under new skipper Himmat Singh, could only manage a draw, settling for one point against J&K. This comes after their underwhelming performance in the opening game against Puducherry, raising questions about the young batting line-up’s resilience against pace.

Yash Dhull, the former India U-19 World Cup captain, managed just 18 runs before being dismissed by Umran Malik, showcasing his struggles against express pace. This isn’t a new issue. His stint with Delhi Capitals in the IPL and practice sessions with Anrich Nortje have revealed similar vulnerabilities.

Yash Dhull struggling not just vs Umran Malik

In fact, across his last 10 innings in all formats, Yash Dhull hasn’t scored a single fifty. This form slump, coupled with his removal from the Delhi captaincy, has sparked discussion within the DDCA about a possible change in his batting position. Some suggest dropping him down the order, to No. 4 or 5, where he might encounter slower bowlers and regain his confidence.

Other Delhi batters, including Vaibhav Kandpal and Himmat Singh, also faltered against J&K’s seam attack lead by Umran Malik. It was only the late partnership between Anuj Rawat (47 not out) and Hrithik Shokeen (25 not out) that salvaged some pride for Delhi, preventing a complete collapse.

While the draw grants Delhi their first point this season, the concerns about their top order persist. Yash Dhull struggles, in particular, require attention, as his development as a future star hinges on overcoming these technical glitches and honing his skills against fast bowlers. The Ranji Trophy, a platform for nurturing talent, presents him with the opportunity to address these weaknesses and emerge stronger, ready for bigger challenges ahead.
