Wrong call! Angelo Mathews reach crease within 2 minutes before being time out

Star Sports show Angelo Matthews reach crease before 2 minutes before being time out in BAN vs SL clash

Angelo Mathews became the first player to be dismissed by Time out. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a time-out as Mathews failed to join the crease within 2 minutes. But now, Star Sports the official broadcasters of the ICC World Cup 2023 in India showed that Mathews made it to the crease within 2 minutes with 10 seconds to spare.

The question therefore stands, was Mathews given out on the wrong call? The ICC rules state that a player must reach the crease within 2 minutes after the previous batter is out or retired hurt.

The rule states – 40.1.1 – After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

Angelo Matthews Dismissal

Angelo Mathews has been dismissed in a bizarre way! The veteran all-rounder was the next batter to take the field after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed. But Mathews took a slow pace to make it to the crease. He also took a wrong helmet with him to the crease and then called on a substitute to get a replacement helmet.

But the Bangladesh players got tired of the wait. Shakib al Hasan appealed to the umpires who got engaged in a long conversation. A bewildered Mathews tried his best to reason with Shakib and the umpires to plead his case. Had Shakib withdrawn his appeal, Mathews would have got a life. But the Bangladesh skipper decided otherwise and Mathews had to walk back, thereby becoming the first-ever player in International cricket to be dismissed in time out.
