Six months after Chetan Sharma was sacked as the chief selector, BCCI have begun a search for his replacement. The Indian Cricket Board has invited applications for a member of the selection committee with just over 3 months left for the World Cup 2023. Shiv Sunder Das is the interim chief, while Virender Sehwag has been strongly linked with the post.

The current members of the committee are Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, Sridharan Sharath and Shiv Sundar Das, who acts as the interim chairperson. To apply for the position, the candidate must have played at least seven Test matches, thirty First Class matches, ten One Day International matches, and twenty First Class matches. He or she should also have retired from the game at least 5 years ago.

Eligibility for Selection Committee post

  • Should have played a minimum of:
  • a) 7 (Seven) Test Matches; OR
  • b) 30 (Thirty) First Class Matches; OR
  • c) 10 (Ten) One Day International Matches and 20 (Twenty) First Class matches.
  • Should have retired from the game at least 5 years previously.
  • No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee

BCCI sacked Chetan Sharma earlier this year after he revealed team secrets in a sting operation. Sharma recently convened a meeting for the North Zone squad selection for the Duleep Trophy. With just three months to go for the World Cup 2023, BCCI has opted to act and bring in a replacement for the beleaguered former India pacer.

There has been a lot of debate surrounding eligibility and the remuneration the BCCI pays the selectors. With broadcast and sponsorship deals in plenty, former cricketers gain a lot more from commentary than doing the hard yards as a selector. Furthermore, BCCI requires a player to be retired for 5 years, ruling out many of the modern Indian cricketers.

The BCCI have set a deadline on June 30 for all applications. The hiring is a key position with the Asia Cup and the World Cup 2023 on the horizon. The selection committee will also have to phase out the seniors and draw in new blood, something that it has failed to do so far.
