Women's IPL 2023: PBKS interested in owning WIPL team

The BCCI has already begun discussions with existing IPL franchises on owning WIPL teams. The move came after BCCI top brass green-signalled six-team WIPL for 2023 at their annual general meeting last year. While many of the IPL franchises are interested in owning WIPL teams, the BCCI is also open to the idea of corporate-backed teams. A final decision on WIPL 2023 process will be taken at the AGM in September.

Odisha’s Barabati Stadium could be venue for WIPL team if Odisha Govt successfully ventures into cricket

As for Odisha government, the sports department has already begun discussions even before BCCI greenlights a move for ‘outsiders’. Sanjay Behera said that OCA had a discussion with Capri Global. The multi-national company owns the Sharjah Warriors in UAE’s ILT20 League. Capri Global also has a partnership with Gujarat Titans in IPL.

“We had a discussion in this context with a multinational company Capri Global and its managing director had visited Barabati stadium. He expressed satisfaction over the infrastructure facilities,” Sanjay Behera told TNIE, adding that it will be a big boost for Odisha women cricketers.

However, there could be a matter of conflict of interest if OCA or Odisha Govt directly gets involved into WIPL. In such a case, it would be interesting to see how it folds out. The inaugural WIPL 2023 will be played in March.
