Catch who won IPL match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have scripted their biggest win in IPL history, and Mumbai Indians (MI) have endured their heaviest defeat in the league. In what was billed as another chapter of the IPL’s El Clásico, the contest turned one-sided very quickly, with CSK thrashing MI by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

No MS Dhoni, no Rohit Sharma. Yet, the hype around the fixture didn’t drop. But once the game began, it was all about CSK executing far better across phases, led by a Sanju Samson masterclass and a ruthless spin choke in the chase. CSK posted 207/6, powered by Samson’s unbeaten 101 off 54 balls. MI never really got close, bowled out for just 104 in 19 overs.

Samson century sets it up

CSK’s innings had the perfect start. They had 73/2 in the Powerplay, which gave them early control, with Ruturaj Gaikwad setting the tone before Samson took over. Again, Gaikwad failed to score big, as Allah Ghazanfar got him. The Afghani spinner was MI’s best bowler, finishing with 2/25. However, Samson negotiated with him and got ultra-attacking against the rest of the bowlers. What stood out was the way Samson paced it. He got to his fifty in 26 balls but never looked in a rush.

He picked his moments. Took on the matchups he liked, stayed quiet against Bumrah and Ghazanfar, and then opened up again at the death. The hundred came off the last ball, but by then, the damage was already done. At one stage, CSK looked set for 220-plus, but MI did pull things back slightly through Bumrah (1/31). Still, 207 on that surface was always going to be a tough chase.

Akeal Hosien chokes MI batting

At the halfway mark, Mumbai would’ve been hopeful. In their opening match of the season against KKR, they chased down 221. However, in a matter of 15 balls, you knew that the match had gone way past them.

MI were blown away in the Powerplay itself. From 29/3 in six overs, the chase never really recovered. Akeal Hosein set the tone early, picking wickets in his first three overs, while Mukesh Choudhary kept things tight from the other end. Hosein finished with 4/17, taking a wicket in his four overs each.

Tilak Varma (37 off 29) tried to hold things together, but once he fell, it became a procession. Noor Ahmad struck twice in an over, removing Hardik Pandya and Rutherford, while Hosein was the man for CSK. MI were eventually bundled out for 104, their lowest total against CSK in IPL history.
