The 34-year-old veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami is set to return to international cricket after spending almost a year away from the Indian team. The BCCI has announced a 15-member squad for the five-match series against England. Once again, Suryakumar Yadav is set to lead the India, team includes Mohammed Shami, and the series will kick off on January 22 in Kolkata. It will then move to Chennai, Rajkot, and Pune, and conclude with the final match in Mumbai.
It will be interesting to see whether he gets the chance in the first match or if the team will prioritize the young pacers first.
For Shami, this is a rebirth in the T20I format, which many believed was over after his underwhelming performance in the T20I World Cup 2022 semi-final against England. His selection comes as a surprise to many, as T20Is were thought to be behind him.
Shami has only played 23 T20Is in his career, along with 64 Tests and 101 ODIs, with Tests and ODIs remaining his preferred formats.
When was the last time Mohammed Shami played for Team India?
It was during the 2023 50-over World Cup final that Shami last played for Team India. It also came to light that, during the tournament, he was struggling with an ankle injury and played several games despite the issue. Shortly after the World Cup, he underwent surgery, which sidelined him from the Indian squad. After a successful recovery, Shami participated in numerous domestic tournaments, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and, more recently, the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He is now all set for a fresh start in T20Is format which he last played in 2022.
