For once, there was genuine reason for celebration in the West Indies dressing room. After years of struggling to make an impact in Test cricket, the Caribbean side finally had something tangible to show for their efforts. A crushing innings-and-217-run victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka, followed by a hard-fought draw in Antigua, sealed a 1-0 series win and handed West Indies their first series triumph of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
Yet within hours of completing that success, there was something unwelcoming for the Caribbean outfit. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined West Indies players 10 per cent of their match fees and docked the team two World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the sanction after West Indies were found to be two overs short of the required rate once time allowances had been taken into account. Under ICC regulations, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side falls behind, while teams lose one WTC point per over short.
West Indies captain Roston Chase accepted the offence and the proposed punishment, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, alongside third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Deighton Buttler.
WTC blow takes shine off rare series success
The West Indies team are already languishing in the bottom half of the table. Only Pakistan are in a worse position but they have played just four matches as compared to the West Indies’ 10. Before the deduction, West Indies had improved their tally to 20 points after the drawn Test in Antigua. The penalty immediately reduced that number to 18 and dropped their percentage of points won to 15.00. West Indies now have one win, two draws and seven defeats from ten Tests in the cycle.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, remain sixth despite failing to win a match in the series.
The challenge for Roston Chase’s side is that the road ahead does not get any easier. The West Indies are set to face Pakistan in a crucial series, while England also await later in the cycle. So, the challenges will get tougher for them.
