There are some cricketers whose records define an era. Then there are a rare few whose names become bigger than the game itself. Sir Garfield Sobers belonged to the second category. The cricket world was plunged into mourning on Friday (July 17) after the passing of the West Indies legend at the age of 89. His son, Daniel Sobers, confirmed the heartbreaking news from Barbados.
The new-age cricket fans might not know but Sobers wasn’t merely the greatest West Indian cricketer. He was the greatest cricketer. Full stop. Despite all the off-field shenaningans, Sobers was the best in his own right on the cricket pitch. A man who could walk into any team in the world as a specialist batter, a specialist bowler or an elite fielder and still be among the first names on the teamsheet.
Sir Gary Sobers: The man who could do everything
Born in Barbados, Sobers made his Test debut as a teenager and quickly established himself as one of the sport’s most gifted talents. In 1958, at just 21 years of age, he announced himself to the world with an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, a record that stood as the highest individual Test score for 36 years.
Few players in history have possessed the ability to seamlessly switch between fast-medium pace, left-arm orthodox spin and wrist spin depending on what the team required. Then there was his fielding. Sharp reflexes, safe hands and incredible athleticism made him one of the finest close-in fielders of his generation. Sobers captained the Caribbean outfit for years as well.
