Watch Yashasvi Jaiswal sprint on a beach after getting India call-up for West Indies tour

Prior to being called up to the Test team for the upcoming all-format tour of the West Indies, Jaiswal was picked as the opener for the 2021–23 World Test Championship Final.

Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal ran on the beach on Monday in preparation for his upcoming overseas assignments. Under the watchful eye of his trainer, the left-handed batter ran a few laps between the cones while sporting a Rajasthan Royals t-shirt. The video was posted by Yashasvi on his Instagram page. Jaiswal was selected as an opener for the 2021–23 World Test Championship Final before being called up to the Test squad for the impending all-format tour of the West Indies. His first-class performance for Mumbai (1,845 runs at an average of 80.21) and his career-high 625 runs from 14 games in the 2023 IPL earned him the prize.

“My father started crying (when he got to know),” Jaiswal said after his selection. To get ready for the West Indies tour, he will shortly be traveling to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

“It was good to learn that I’m now a part of the Indian team. But it’s also important that I try to control myself emotionally as much as I can. I know there are both good and bad sides of things, so I try to remain stable,” he emphasised.

Jaiswal acknowledged feeling a bit anxious before seeing his name included in the team. “I was a little nervous. Till the time you do not get to know that your name is there in the team, there are butterflies. But it is a good feeling.

India’s tour of the West Indies will start with the first Test on July 12. After Cheteshwar Pujara’s exclusion, there is just one obvious opening in the lineup, at number three. It would be intriguing to watch if the management of the team will trust a 21-year-old to fill that role.

India’s Test squad for West Indies series: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), KS Bharat (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, Navdeep Saini.
