Watch: Virat Kohli admits unclear catch, shows sportsmanship during IND vs AUS 1st Test

Virat Kohli's honest gesture during the IND vs AUS 1st Test captured hearts, showing true sportsmanship by admitting an unclean catch, gaining admiration.

In the ongoing India vs Australia Test match, Virat Kohli showed a powerful display of sportsmanship, proving why he is admired not just for his cricketing skills but also for his spirit on the field. During IND vs AUS first Test in Perth, Virat Kohli honestly accepted his mistake.

Virat Kohli’s sportsmanship

During the match, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a skiddy ball to Marnus Labuschagne, who edged it toward the second slip. Kohli set there, went low to his right and appeared to have taken the catch. However, as he hit the ground, the ball slipped out of his hands. Even though the moment was tight and crucial, Kohli immediately signalled that the catch was not clean. Bumrah and Rishabh Pant were eager for the wicket, but Kohli’s honesty accepted, showing himself to fair play.

A similar gesture in 2019

This is not the first time Kohli has shown great sportsmanship against Australia. During the 2019 World Cup, Kohli defended Steve Smith, who faced boos and chants of “cheater” from the crowd due to the infamous ball-tampering scandal. While batting, Kohli gestured to the crowd to stop booing and instead cheer for Smith.

Kohli’s thoughts on respect

After the match, Kohli explained his actions, stating that he felt bad for Smith, who had already served his punishment and returned to the sport. “Everyone makes mistakes, but it is important to respect someone who has worked hard to make a comeback,” Kohli had said. Smith was touched by Kohli’s gesture and personally thanked him during a drinks break. The Australian star later remarked, “That was great from Virat, really appreciate it.”

A Role Model for Sportsmanship

Whether through his actions on the field or his interactions off it, Kohli continues to set an example of how sports should be played, he is showing value for the gentleman’s game.
