Watch: Rohit Sharma lauds local UAE pacer who tried to break his legs during Champions Trophy practice

Team India will begin their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.

Rohit Sharma has an uncanny humour that more often than not leaves everyone in splits. Even when having a hard-fought training session for the ICC Champions Trophy, his words bring a smile to people listening. One moment to remember for a lifetime came in for a local UAE pacer, Awais Ahmed, who bowled rigorously to the Indian captain and other batters.

Rohit Sharma troubled by local UAE pacer

India had a practice session late in the day on Monday (Feb 17) at the ICC Academy, where all the players had a batting session. To accommodate as net bowlers, UAE offered local bowlers. Awais, who is a talented left-arm pacer, troubled Rohit as he bowled in inswingers, targetting his legs.

“Class bowler. Aap humara joota… pair todne ki koshish kar rahe the inswinging yorker maar ke. Badiya bhai badiya. Aap log humko yaha help kar rahe ho, bada acha laga, thank you (You were trying to target my show and break my leg with inswing yorkers. I felt very good that you guys have been helping us practice,” Rohit said in a video that has gone viral on social media.

Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of a milestone in the Champions Trophy. With 481 runs in 10 matches, including a century and four half-centuries, he needs just 19 more runs to become the fifth Indian batter to reach 500 runs in the tournament. The top four Indian run-scorers in the Champions Trophy are Shikhar Dhawan (701), Sourav Ganguly (627), Rahul Dravid (627), and Virat Kohli (529).
