In Afghanistan’s historic World Cup win against the defending champions England on Sunday, Player of the Match Mujeeb Ur Rahman impressed not only with bat and ball but also with his touching gesture that endeared him to millions of fans. He dedicated his Man of the Match award to the earthquake victims in Afghanistan. This heartwarming gesture even moved a young fan to tears, as he hugged Mujeeb Ur Rahman after the post-match presentation. Watch the video below.

Unfortunately, earlier on the same day, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 resulted in the loss of two lives in western Afghanistan. This region has been grappling with a series of continuous tremors, leading to a tragic death toll of at least 1,000 people over the past week.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s heroics secure historic win for Afghanistan

Mujeeb Ur rahman received the Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance in the ENG vs AFG World Cup match, which involved scalping three crucial wickets, and also contributing 28 runs. His remarkable display played a crucial role as Afghanistan achieved a historic 69-run win over England at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

“This is for the people back home who have been affected by the earthquake. As players and as a team, I wanted to dedicate my award to them. “It’s a very proud moment to be here in the World Cup beating the last champions, it is a good moment for the whole nation and the team. A wonderful performance for the bowlers and the batters.” Mujeeb Ur Rahman said.

Prior to Sunday’s win, Afghanistan had secured their only World Cup win during their debut in 2015 when they defeated Scotland. However, since that, they had faced a challenging 14-match losing streak at the World Cup. Two of these losses occurred in the current edition of the tournament, with losses of six wickets to Bangladesh and eight wickets to India.

Afghanistan will next face New Zealand in their next World Cup 2023 match in Chennai.
